Shift the Profit

towards the future „industrial“
with Anna Abl & Anna Edelhofer

Our proposal, “Shift the Profit,” reimagines the historic industrial infrastructure of Sant Adrià de Besòs as a self-sufficient system that supports both human and more-than-human life. Inspired by the area’s iconic trio of chimneys and adjacent turbine halls, we transform the power plant into a melting pot of agriculture, education, and craftsmanship. The chimneys themselves become vertical farmlands, while a repurposed “cube” accommodates workshops and shared learning spaces.

Rather than producing traditional, profit-driven goods, the site yields food, public spaces, and hands-on training opportunities, providing employment while fostering a renewed sense of community. Terraced platforms cascade toward the water’s edge, adapting over time to environmental shifts. As sea levels rise and claim lower tiers, new platforms emerge behind the original structure, resulting in a dynamic, evolving landscape. This approach emphasizes sustainable growth, allowing people to inhabit these platforms according to their needs without compromising the ecological vitality of the shoreline.

By focusing on local production, ecological inclusivity, and communal engagement, the project “shifts the profit” from industrial gain to shared prosperity, redefining the concept of “industry” as an open, cooperative environment that nurtures both human aspirations and biodiversity.
